EXPLANATORY NOTE ABOUT
"CCAMS PRESCHOOL GRADUATION"
December 30, 2015

Dear CCAM Partners and Friends,

An email message from one of our friends has brought to our attention the possibility that the use of the word “preschool” in a previous newsletter may be confusing to some people who are not familiar with how our school functions:  “What age are your pre-school kids?  Usually that refers to really little kids, pre-kindergarten which has 5 yr. olds.  Maybe some of your other friends are confused as I am, as it is unlikely that 4 yr. olds would be writing stories.”

In answer to this question, we remind everyone that the term “preschool” may be defined in various ways, both in the dictionary and in practice.  It is true that the word may refer to a pre-kindergarten educational program for 4-year olds, also known as a nursery school.  But the word’s more general connotation can instead refer to the training of children of any age younger than regular school age.

This general definition is the one that CCAMS has adopted (with some adaptation) to denote the preparatory or remedial training (spanning 1-4 years) of a child of any age who is not yet ready to begin first grade.  In our ministry to disadvantaged Khmer children, who are often delayed in their social and intellectual development, some students begin preschool late and may not graduate from preschool until they are older than the usual age for entering first grade.  This delay trend usually continues throughout their educational life, until they eventually pass the 12th Grade Government Exam a few years later than would be normally expected.

In summary, at CCAMS we “home school” all of our children, helping them to progress individually at their own pace.  Because we are a Christian arts ministry, we also start our arts training at the earliest possible age.  This arts emphasis may be different from the more traditional-style programs.  However, as our children’s gifts and talents are patiently revealed, developed, and liberated, it is amazing to witness what these children are able to accomplish, even at a very young age!  Check out our many Facebook posts!

Following are the names and ages of the children who have so far graduated from the CCAMS preschool:  Pheakdey 6, Isaac 7, John 8, Vina 8, Hannah 8, Vorn 9, Sapor 9, Parichhat 10, Lieng 11. Click here to view “CCAMS Preschool Graduation” on Facebook.
